Hard Water and a New Bathroom

What is actually happening
A whole-house water softener installed in the Peoria area costs $1,400-3,200 and protects the water heater, dishwasher and kitchen as well as the new bathroom.
Hard water carries dissolved calcium and magnesium picked up from limestone and dolomite in the ground. Water evaporates; minerals do not. Every drop that dries on a surface leaves a trace amount behind, and the traces accumulate.
On most surfaces that is a cleaning problem. On glass it is a materials problem. Glass has a microscopically porous surface, minerals settle into those pores, and over time the deposits bond chemically with the silica. At that point you are not cleaning a deposit off glass - the glass surface itself has changed, and no product reverses it.

The order above is not marketing - it reflects where the mineral is removed. A softener takes it out before it ever reaches the glass; a coating stops it bonding; a squeegee removes the water before it evaporates. Doing nothing lets the process run to completion.
If you are fitting a softener anyway, the glass coating becomes optional rather than important. If you are not, the coating is close to essential in this water.
Choosing fixtures for hard water
- Polished chrome. Hides spotting best, can be polished if dulled, and every plumber can service it.
- Brushed nickel. Nearly as forgiving, warmer look, slightly harder to match if a piece is replaced later.
- Matte black and matte white. Beautiful, and they show every dried droplet. Choose knowingly.
- Unlacquered brass. Designed to patina, so hard water spotting reads as character rather than damage - genuinely a good hard-water choice.
- Valve internals matter more than the handle. Ceramic disc cartridges resist scale better than older designs, and mainstream brands keep parts available for decades.
